Conservation Education
The NCDFR sponsors, conducts or assists with several environmental education efforts designed for teachers and other educators.
Investigating Your Environment Workshops
Each summer the North Carolina Division of Forest Resources offers educators a chance to explore the environment with innovative learning activities suitable for integration into any school curriculum.
Sustainable Forestry Teachers Academy
The Sustainable Forestry Teachers' Academy is a four-day residential program held in the summer, that focuses on the social, economic, and environmental aspects of sustainable forestry.
Tuition, lodging, all meals, admission fees (including The Biltmore Estate or Tryon Palace), and transportation while at the Academy are fully funded by grants and local businesses. There is no application fee. Selected participants are required to submit a deposit of $50 to hold their spot in the Academy. The deposit will be returned upon arrival.
These tours are sponsored by the North Carolina Forestry Association, the North Carolina Division of Forest Resources, and the North Carolina Forestry & Environmental Outreach Program.
Project Learning Tree Workshop
Project Learning Tree is an award-winning environmental education program designed for teachers and other educators working with students in kindergarten through grade twelve. PLT uses the forest as a "window" into the natural world, helping young people gain an awareness and knowledge of the world around them, as well as their place within it.
PLT is a source of interdisciplinary instructional activities and provides workshops and in-service programs for teachers, foresters, park and nature center staff, and youth group leaders. To receive information on where this workshop is being conducted in your area please call Chris Carlson at (919) 857-4819, extension 262, or the Forestry office in your area. Workshop information may also be found on the online calendar, or by contacting the NC PLT State Coordinator, Renee Strnad, at 919-515-5518.
Educational State Forest Classes
The NCDFR's six Educational State Forests each offer unique educational programs for students from kindergarten through middle school. Classes are correlated with N.C. Department of Public Instruction guidelines.
